The Blustream SP18CS is a professional HDMI distribution device designed to send one source to eight displays at the same time. That distinction is important. It is a splitter, not a switcher or matrix: every connected screen receives the same programme rather than choosing independently from several sources. For digital signage, sports displays, overflow rooms, classrooms, retail spaces, control areas and public venues, that simple one-to-eight arrangement can be exactly what is required.
The core specification is HDMI 2.0 at 18Gbps, with support for signals up to 4K UHD at 60Hz with 4:4:4 chroma and HDR. In practical terms, the SP18CS can distribute detailed 4K video while retaining full colour information, which is useful for computer-generated material, text and graphics as well as ordinary video. HDCP 2.2 support also allows it to work with protected commercial content sources, provided that the rest of the signal chain is compliant.
Its most useful feature is automatic video down-conversion on individual outputs. Mixed-display installations are often difficult because one older 1080p screen can force the source to use a lower common resolution for every display. The SP18CS can feed a lower-resolution display with a converted signal while retaining the original 4K output on compatible screens. It supports conversion to formats such as 4K 60Hz 4:2:0 or 1080p, depending on the display. This does not make every combination of screen and source foolproof, but it gives an installer far more flexibility than a basic passive splitter.
Advanced EDID management is another professional feature. EDID is the information a display sends back to a source to describe the resolutions and audio formats it can accept. In a system with eight screens, conflicting EDID information can lead to blank displays, incorrect resolution or lost audio. The SP18CS uses DIP-switch controls to give the installer a more predictable way to manage the handshake. It is not as friendly as an app-based setup wizard, but physical switches are dependable, visible and appropriate for equipment that may be installed in a rack and left running for years.
Audio handling is unusually capable for a splitter. Alongside HDMI audio on all eight outputs, the unit provides simultaneous optical digital and analogue stereo breakout. This makes it possible to route sound into a separate amplifier, mixer, soundbar or assistive listening system without adding a separate audio extractor. Supported HDMI formats include multichannel and object-based audio pass-through in line with HDMI specifications. In installations where pictures go to several screens but sound needs to be managed centrally, that audio breakout can simplify the system considerably.
The physical design is clearly intended for permanent AV work. At 300mm wide, 92mm deep and only 23mm high, the chassis is slim enough to fit neatly behind equipment or within a rack arrangement. A mounting kit and 12V power supply are included. Input and output status indicators help with fault finding, while the rear panel provides one HDMI input, eight HDMI outputs, optical audio, a 3.5mm analogue output and controls for EDID and smart scaling.
There are limitations, and they should be understood before purchase. HDMI 2.0 means the SP18CS is intended for 4K60 systems, not modern HDMI 2.1 requirements such as 4K at 120Hz, 8K distribution or advanced gaming features. It also duplicates one source only; venues that need different content on different screens require a matrix switcher or a signage network. CEC control passes only between the source and the display on output one, so buyers should not expect universal control across all eight screens.
A further consideration is product lifecycle. Blustream currently lists the original SP18CS in its end-of-life section, even though the unit remains available through KPMS. That does not make it unsuitable—many established commercial AV products remain useful for years—but purchasers planning a new long-term standard should confirm stock, firmware and support arrangements. Blustream also offers a newer SP18CS-V2, so specification-led buyers may wish to compare the two before committing.
Overall, the SP18CS is a well-equipped and practical distributor for established 4K60 installations. Smart scaling, EDID control and dual-format audio breakout separate it from inexpensive consumer splitters that merely copy a signal and hope every display agrees.
For an installer who needs one reliable HDMI source on up to eight mixed-resolution screens, it remains a credible solution. It is less suitable for next-generation HDMI 2.1 projects, but within its intended 18Gbps environment it offers the control and flexibility expected from professional AV hardware.
